If
we are lucky we can learn from mistakes of others. The Adria 2012 expedition
ended in a day, sadly at the starting point not at the ending. Luckily nobody
got hurt except the bow of a kayak.

Nočem biti general po bitki, niti zvon po toči, niti ... ok, saj ste dojeli. Želel bi pa izpostaviti par stvari, ki se mi zdijo pomembne in iz katerih se lahko vsi kaj naučimo.
I
would like to comment some things so we can all learn from it.
Self
rescue, assisted reentry and Eskimo roll are the basics of seakayaking. We have
to practice, practice and practice in real situations and with kayak fully
loaded. The weak link in kayaking is almost always the paddler and all other objective dangers end
up being pretty subjective at the end. If we make a small mistake at the end,
we can still make it right (adjusting the bearing) but if we make a whole chain
of mistakes it’s hard to unwind the situation. We also have to have a healthy
reserve in time (ETA) and space (alternative route).
Polno naložen kajak ima lahko tudi 80kg in se obnaša povsem drugače kot prazen. Poleg tega veter in val naredita svoje in ko čolna več ne obvladamo, ne vozimo več v željeni smeri ali se ne moremo sproščeno ustaviti, postanemo zaletavi. V takem stanju se rado zgodi, da vsak po svoje nadaljuje pot kolikor hitro lahko, da se reši neugodnih razmer. Zgodilo se mi je že, da je kdo v hektiki zgrešil zbirno mesto in to za toliko, da je pristal na drugem otoku kot glavnina. Pri tem pa se posamezniki ločijo od skupine ali dva posameznika drug od drugega in plovba postane veliko bolj nevarna kot v skupini. Vejetno nam je vsem jasno, da reševanja v paru odpade, če ostaneš sam.
Fully loaded seakayak
can weight up to 80kg. Wind and waves are not making it easy, too. So if we
fail to navigate in right direction or we can’t stop and wait relaxed we become
irrational. It happens that someone begins paddling full speed just to get out
of the conditions. It happened to me once that a paddler missed gathering point
and ended on another island as the group. And because he was separated from the
group, he faced more danger in case of capsize. And as you know you can’t make
an assisted reentry if you are alone. Than the self rescue routine kicks in (if
you still remember it).
Izbira kajaka je seveda zelo pomembna. Obstaja nešteto variacij, na koncu pa je najboljši tisti, v katerem se najbolje počutimo. Tak kajak večinoma ni ne najhitrejši, ne najlažji, pa vendar je na daljši rok hitrejši, saj v njem veslamo udobno in sproščeno. Tudi material ima veliko vlogo in medtem ko so steklena vlakna lažja, je polietilen odpornejši in v tem primeru bi bilo odpravo mogoče nadaljevati. Neko varovalko pa rabi vsaka skupina ali posameznik in bolje je da poškodujemo material, kot samega sebe. Jaz pravim: I ♥ HTP!
Choosing a kayak is
very important. They come in all shapes (and colors) and the best kayak is the
safest one. It may not be the lightest or the fastest, but you can paddle it
relaxed and safe and at the end of the day it’s also faster. Fiberglass or
carbon are much lighter but it’s polyethylene that normally prevails on
Adriatic Sea. I ♥ HTP!
Distribucija opreme v notranjosti kajaka mora biti uravnotežena. Če ni, tvegamo konstantno obračanje v veter ali z vetrom, odvisno kateri konec kajaka je preobtežen. V skrajnih razmerah odpove tudi krmilo, v idealnih pa bi bilo možno kajak usmerjati že zgolj z nagibom telesa. Oprema na krovu še dodatno poslabša zadevo, saj zviša težišče in nas naredi manj stabilne. Tukaj velja 'manj je več', saj se z manj ali lažjo opremo premikamo hitreje in bolj varno.
Distribution of the
gear we carry in the kayak has to be balanced. Otherwise the boat turns in or
with the wind. Rudder doesn’t help much in this case and we should actually be
capable of turning on the edge of the kayak. Drybags on the deck don’t help
either because they raise the center of gravity. Less is more here, with less
or lighter gear we move faster and safer.
Last but not least –
culture of paddling is not highly evolved on Adriatic Sea. It seems like no one
understands it except the kayakers and every accident ads to the stereotype
that we shouldn’t be there because we belong in the shore line or even on
rivers and lakes.
Vesel sem, da sta fanta preživela in da se vse skupaj (še?) ni razmahnilo v medijski pogrom proti kajakašem. Nesreče se dogajajo, tudi najboljšim. Upam tudi, da bo kakšnen epilog napisan na blogu odprave. Za naslednjič pa več sreče, treninga in mirno morje.
I’m glad that they
survived and that there was no media hunt against seakayakers (for now).
Accidents do happen, even to the best of us. I hope we’ll see an epilogue of the
accident on their blog. More luck, practice and calmer sea next time.
